Important Dates for 2025 Returns

The IRS shuts its e-file system down for a few weeks each winter. Outside those windows, 2025 returns can still be filed on paper.

  1. January 1, 2026 First day to start your 2025 tax return.
  2. January 26, 2026 IRS began accepting e-filed 2025 returns.
  3. April 15, 2026 Deadline to file, request an extension, and pay any tax owed.
  4. October 15, 2026 Extension deadline. Last day to file on time if you requested an extension.
  5. Mid-December 2026 IRS e-file closes for the year. Paper filing only until late January 2027.
  6. Late January 2027 E-filing of 2025 returns resumes.
  7. Mid-November 2027 IRS e-file closes for the year. Paper filing only until late January 2028.
  8. Late January 2028 E-filing of 2025 returns resumes for the final season.
  9. Mid-November 2028 E-filing of 2025 returns closes permanently.
  10. April 15, 2029 Last day to claim a 2025 refund. After this date you can still file, but any refund is forfeited.
