EasyTaxUSA E-File Your 2023 Taxes

This is the last season to e-file a 2023 return. The IRS accepts electronic returns for the current year and the two before it, and 2023 drops off that list when the IRS closes e-file for the year this November. After that, a 2023 return has to be printed and mailed. Create an account, enter your information, and submit online while you still can. Free live help is included.

Important Dates for 2023 Returns

Two deadlines matter most now: the permanent close of e-filing this November, and the refund cutoff next April.

  1. April 15, 2024 Original deadline to file, request an extension, and pay any tax owed. Late-filing penalties start here if you owe.
  2. October 15, 2024 Extension deadline.
  3. November 26, 2024 IRS e-file closed for 2024. Paper filing only until January 26, 2025.
  4. January 27, 2025 E-filing of 2023 returns resumed.
  5. December 19, 2025 IRS e-file closed for 2025. Paper filing only until January 25, 2026.
  6. January 26, 2026 E-filing of 2023 returns resumed for the final season. You can e-file now.
  7. Mid-November 2026 E-filing of 2023 returns closes permanently. From here on, 2023 returns must be printed and mailed.
  8. April 15, 2027 Last day to claim a 2023 refund. After this date you can still file, but any refund is forfeited.

The exact November shutdown date is announced by the IRS each fall. Don’t cut it close: a return that is rejected on the last day may not be fixable in time to e-file.

Frequently Asked Questions About Filing Your 2023 Taxes

Until the IRS closes its e-file system for the year in mid-November 2026. When e-file reopens in January 2027, it will only accept 2024, 2025, and 2026 returns, so 2023 becomes paper-only for good. If you finish after the shutdown, we prepare your return for you to print, sign, and mail.
