Important Dates for 2024 Returns

The IRS shuts its e-file system down for a few weeks each winter. Outside those windows, 2024 returns can still be filed on paper.

  1. January 27, 2025 IRS began accepting e-filed 2024 returns.
  2. April 15, 2025 Original deadline to file, request an extension, and pay any tax owed. Late-filing penalties start here if you owe.
  3. October 15, 2025 Extension deadline.
  4. December 19, 2025 IRS e-file closed for 2025. Paper filing only until January 25, 2026.
  5. January 26, 2026 E-filing of 2024 returns resumed. You can e-file now.
  6. Mid-November 2026 IRS e-file closes for the year. Paper filing only until late January 2027.
  7. Late January 2027 E-filing of 2024 returns resumes for the final season.
  8. Mid-November 2027 E-filing of 2024 returns closes permanently. Paper filing only after this date.
  9. April 15, 2028 Last day to claim a 2024 refund. After this date you can still file, but any refund is forfeited.
